Programa del Adolescente de Naranjito, Inc.: Proyecto Manejando el Coraje Prevenimos la Violencia

Proyecto Manejando el Coraje Prevenimos la Violencia uses a cognitive behavioral approach to improve self-regulation skills in order to reduce violence and prevent substance abuse among students in Naranjito, Puerto Rico. Participants identify and modify habits of thought that contribute to violence and substance abuse, recognize and mitigate physiological reactions, apply problem-solving techniques, and learn social skills and healthy decision-making. By strengthening social competencies and confidence, and addressing other self-regulatory abilities, the program seeks to prevent substance abuse, violence, and other risky behaviors.

The program is delivered once a week during a semester by a social worker and a psychologist to 12- to 18-years-old students from intermediate or upper schools in Naranjito. The program’s principal activities are organized around the following four skill sets, each consisting of three sessions: (1) cognitive, (2) physiological, (3) behavioral, and (4) social. Each session includes a different set of goals, objectives, activities, and evaluation.

With funding from SAMHSA’s Service to Science Subcontract to Build Evaluation Capacity of Evidence-Based Interventions, program staff will conduct a pre-test/post-test evaluation to determine whether Proyecto Manejando el Coraje Prevenimos la Violencia is: (1) being delivered as intended and (2) associated with reductions in violent acts and substance abuse rates among participants. Using the program’s selection criteria, evaluators will divide 40 participants into groups of 10 (with two groups receiving the intervention each semester) and administer questionnaires to students, parents, and teachers before and after the intervention to assess participant improvement. Program staff will then draft a report on the data collected and disseminate an information bulletin to community members.
