Organizations focusing on Underage Drinking
Center for Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws
The goal of the center is to provide science-based, practical, and effective training and technical assistance to States and communities involved in enforcing underage alcohol access and use laws. Provided by the Pacific Institute for Evaluation and Research (PIRE) with funding from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) under the Enforcing Underage Drinking initiative.
This site includes access to more than 20 publications and topics ranging from the costs of underage drinking to specific operational guidelines for law enforcement and from environmental strategies for college campuses to conducting youth surveys. The how-to guides and reports listed below can be downloaded or ordered at no charge.
FACE: Truth and Clarity about Alcohol
FACE is a national non-profit organization that supports sensible alcohol practices through the development of messages, strategies and training designed to create public awareness about the connection between alcohol and critical public health issues. FACE provides actions that communities can implement to address these problems.
Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free
Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free, a unique coalition of more than 30 Governors' spouses, Federal agencies, and public and private organizations, is an initiative to prevent the use of alcohol by children ages 9 to 15. It is the only national effort that focuses on alcohol use in this age group. The initiative was founded by The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and has been joined by additional Federal sponsors.
MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) Under 21
"Underage drinking is more than a rite of passage. It's an invitation to clouded judgment, limited control and consequences that can last a lifetime. Young people across the country are working to change the current culture and make a difference in their communities." (MADD Under 21) This section of the Mothers Against Drunk Driving website focuses entirely on underage drinking prevention. It breaks down resources by age group, with additional resources for parents and teachers.
NCADD Campaign to Prevention Kids from Drinking
The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) dedicates this section of their website to underage drinking prevention. Among other resources is a section on grassroots activities (http://www.ncadd.org/programs/awareness/aamnthgrass.html), as well as background information and a variety of other suggested activities and resources.
Reducing Underage Drinking Through Coalitions
Twelve member coalitions from around the country participate in this program to discourage underage drinking and, in the process, reduce alcohol-related problems among young people. Sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, with professional direction and technical assistance from the American Medical Association, the site contains a database of state-enacted bills on alcohol policy.
