Service to Science Academy
Download a Conference Brochure for Service to Science
The Southwest CAPT Service To Science Academy is a two-day workshop designed to enhance the capacity of states, sub-state recipients and community-based organizations/coalitions to plan, design, implement and evaluate evidence-based effective prevention interventions. Each Academy is customized to support the needs of the groups/organizations and programs accepted to attend, specifically toward the development of a strong evaluation and/or research design. Participants receive training and technical assistance helping them move along the evidence-based continuum.
The application to attend a Service to Science Academy is a modified National Association of State Alcohol & Substance Abuse Directors (NASADAD) application for Innovative/Exemplary Programs. It is reviewed by a panel who makes recommendations for acceptance to the Academy. Content is then specifically customized to fit the needs of the accepted applicants.
The Academy agenda generally includes:
• An introduction to the Southwest CAPT and its services
• Instruction on developing a successful application
• An update on the status of SAMHSA's National Registry of Effective Programs and Practices (NREPP)
• Guidance on developing logic models
• Support for the practice of cultural competency and
• One-on-one assistance provided by experienced evaluators targeted to meet the specific needs of the attendees.
• Participants will also have an opportunity to receive an additional 30-40 hours of technical assistance after the 2-day face-to-face event.
Logistical and registration information will be provided to Service to Science Academy Participants when notified of their acceptance to the Academy.
2008 SUMMER Application Packet
While Academy participants are not expected to become evaluators, they do receive support that assists them in becoming more informed consumers of evaluation services and an increasing ability to become active participants in the evaluation process. Each team leaves the Academy with specific steps for progress and access to ongoing follow up technical assistance as needed.
Attendees receive guidance on ways to strengthen their application and are encouraged to contact their state National Prevention Network (NPN) representative to gain support for their application to NASADAD for recognition as an innovative program.
