Substance abuse by clients served within the mental health treatment system is an established concern and pervasive clinical challenge. Attempts to serve these individuals within mainstream mental health or substance abuse treatment settings has had mixed results. This presentation is designed to provide an introductory overview of the challenges associated with treatment planning and treatment delivery for clients with co-occurring disorders as well as a review of emerging best practice treatment strategies based on an integrated approach to working with this population. In particular, this presentation will review the principles, approaches and interventions for providing services to this population and will include a description of The Integrated Treatment for Dual Disorders (IDDT) model which is recognized as an evidenced based treatment for serving persons with co-occurring chronic mental health and substance use disorders.
