Policy: A Strategy for Prevention Practitioners

Target Audience: State-level and community-level prevention practitioners with an interest in policy and the best ways you might go about learning how to use policy. This workshop is appropriate for participants with a basic level of expertise in this area.

Training Objectives: Participants will be able to:

• Understand the benefits of policy in achieving prevention goals.
• Examine some of the barriers in developing policy at the local level.
• Describe several types of policy strategies which have been applied and
evaluated at the national, state and community levels.
• Examine case examples of successfully implemented policy strategies at the
community level.

Format of Training: This training explores the following topics: benefits of policy, guidelines for making policy at the local level, policies that restrict access and availability, policy strategies that target the prices of alcohol and tobacco products, policy strategies that limit the location and density of retail alcohol outlets, policy strategies that deter citizens from breaking the law, policy strategies that place restrictions on use in public places, policy strategies that restrict marketing of alcohol and tobacco in public places.

CSAP's Northeast CAPT trainers will use the following techniques throughout this workshop:

• Presentation of background material
• Small group work that challenges participants to examine the effectiveness
of real world cases of prevention
• Large group discussion designed to draw lessons and experiences from
participants

Timeframe: Approximately 3-3 1/2 hours

Number of Participants: Minimum of 10 up to a maximum of 50 participants
