Introduction to Strategic Planning

Target Audience: State-level and community-level prevention practitioners with an interest in designing and implementing effective prevention programs to meet their needs.  This workshop is appropriate for participants with a basic level of expertise in this area.

Training Objectives: Participants will be able to:

• Increase understanding of the strategic planning process as a framework for
designing and implementing effective programs
• Practice using selected tools that can facilitate a strategic planning process

Format of Training: This training focuses on designing programs based on prevention strategies that work: establishing long-term outcomes; incorporating science-based strategies; creating a mission statement; developing short-term outcomes; establishing program objectives; and planning action steps. It also overviews implementing science-based programs; planning/working with agency teams and/or coalitions; assessing needs and resources; and evaluating and refining science-based efforts.

CSAP's Northeast CAPT trainers will use the following techniques throughout this workshop:

• Presentation of background material
• Large group discussion designed to draw lessons and experiences from
participants

Timeframe: Approximately 3 hours

Number of Participants: Minimum of 10 up to a maximum of 50 participants
