CSAP’S Northeast CAPT Cultural Adaptation Audioconference

Monday, August 25, 2003 Conference Transcript

12:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M., Eastern Time

Overview:

Cultural adaptation involves the inclusion of participants' values, traditions and cultural perspective in the curriculum or model program. Research on model programs indicates that not all model programs are effective with different ethnic populations. Although some model programs have culturally specific components, it is still important to localize the program and make the appropriate cultural adaptations. Research also shows that culturally adapted model programs have a larger effect size. This audio conference is for LEAs and recipients of Grants to Reduce Substance Abuse who are interested in culturally adapting model programs while maintaining program fidelity and evaluating effectiveness. The specific content will focus on questions submitted by participants prior to the teleconference.

Objectives:

• Participants will identify guidelines for culturally adapting model programs including planning, implementing core components with fidelity and evaluation

• Participants will increase their understanding of the Families and Schools Together (FAST) program, an example of a model program that has been effectively adapted and implemented with several different cultural groups.

• Participants will identify the barriers and solutions to culturally adapting model programs

• Participants will increase their understanding of cultural inclusion and its role in cultural adaptation
