What is an electronic
mailing list (e.g. listserv) and how do I use one?
An electronic mailing list allows various e-mail users to send e-mail
messages to one central address. The message is then forwarded to every
subscriber of the mailing list. The advantage of this system is that a
user only needs to know one e-mail address, as opposed to all of the individual
addresses of each group member. This is the body text.
Subscribing to an electronic
mailing list
Individuals, organizations, federal agencies, and many other groups use
electronic mailing lists to keep people informed of the latest news and
funding opportunities, to make decisions, and to network. While
the number of relevant substance abuse-related mailing lists is too great
to detail, the following free mailing lists may provide practitioners
a good place to begin:
-
JTO Direct developed by Join Together is a regular source of news,
research, grant announcements and prevention alerts related to substance
abuse and gun violence. To subscribe, go to http://www.jointogether.org/
and look for JTO Direct.
-
PreventioNews Mailing List created by the National Prevention Information
Network (NPIN), of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's
National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention provides information
on conferences, funding opportunities, selected research articles,
and announcements about new products and services. To subscribe to
the mailing list, send a blank message to prevention-news-subscribe@cdcnpin.org
-
ARIV, the alcohol-related injury and violence mailing list is a source
of information for prevention practitioners interested in the relationship
between alcohol, injury, and violence. To subscribe, send a message

words in the body of the message: subscribe alcohol-injury alcohol-injury@igc.topica.com
-
HECNEWS developed by the Higher Education Center for Alchol and Other
Drug Prevention disseminates news stories related to alcohol and other
drug abuse prevention in higher education. To subscribe, send an e-mail

Tips for the appropriate use
of electronic mailing lists
-
If someone who is not subscribed sends a message to the list address,
it will not be allowed to go through to the entire list.
-
If someone sends a message to the list address as well as multiple
other addresses, it will not go through. A user must send a separate
email to each different mailing list address.
-
If the size of the message you are sending is over 100k, it will
not go through to the entire list. If the message includes graphics,
this is especially true.
-
If a message you sent is not returned to you via the electronic mailing
list, there is a problem. When this happens, the list manager is notified
that the message has been "bounced" and tries to figure
out what has happened.
-
Remember not to reply to the entire group when you mean to reply
only to one person subscribed to the mailing list. If you are sending
an email for just one person, send it only to that person, not the
whole list.
-
Always sign your name to an email that you send to a mailing list.
Otherwise, it is difficult to find out who has sent the message and
to whom we should reply.
-
Mailing lists should not be used to discuss personal issues or conduct
commercial activity. These lists are a way to communicate with your
peers about issues directly affecting all of them.
