Underage Drinking Trends 1991 to 2003

Data compiled from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey at http://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/yrbs/index.htm

The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), surveys high school students across the nation on topics relating to risky behaviors. According to the YRBS, most results for underage drinking rates have been fairly stable in the last decade. However, the most recent results from 2003 recorded the lowest rates in this past decade. The percentage of students who had at least one drink in their lifetime ranged between 78 and 82 percent from 1991 until 2001, and decreased to 75 percent in 2003. The percentage of students who had at least one drink in the previous 30 days ranged from 47 percent to 52 percent between 1991 and 2001, and decreased to 45 percent in 2003. The binge drinking percentage (five or more drinks in one occasion in the previous 30 days) has a similar trend, ranging between 29 and 34 percent, decreasing to 28 percent in 2003.

The Monitoring the Future survey conducted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) also reported fairly stable underage drinking trends during the previous decade. Among 8th graders, lifetime use of alcohol decreased from 55 percent in the 1990s to 44 percent by 2004. Among 10th grade students, the reported lifetime use decreased from 70 to 71 percent in the 1990s, to 64 percent in 2004. Among 12th graders, lifetime use decreased from 79 to 80 percent in the 1990s to 77 percent in 2004. Current 30 day use rates in 2004 were as follows: 19 percent among 8th grade students, 35 percent among 10th grade students, and 48 percent among 12th grade students.
