What does recent research data show about underage drinking in New Hampshire?

The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and conducted by States’ Departments of Education (not all states conducted the YRBS), surveys high school students throughout the nation on topics relating to risky behaviors. According to the 2003 New Hampshire YRBS results, 76 percent of students had at least one drink in their lifetime compared to 79 percent in 2001; 47 percent had at least one drink in the previous 30 days compared to 53 percent in 2001; and 31 percent had five drinks in one occasion in the previous month compared to 32 percent in 2001. Compared to 2001 data, reported alcohol consumption decreased in all categories.

Though females were more likely to have had at least one drink in their lifetime (77 percent compared to 75 percent of males), rates of current drinking (at least one drink in the previous thirty days) were about the same for males and females. Males, however, reported higher rates of binge drinking than females (33 percent versus 29 percent of females reported this behavior).

The New Hampshire 2001 YRBS compared results of Caucasian students to those of all other ethnic groups. The results indicate that non-Caucasian students were more likely to drink than Caucasian students: 84 percent of non-Caucasian and 79 percent of Caucasian students reported lifetime use, 56 percent of non-Caucasian and 52 of Caucasian reported current use, and 35 percent of non-Caucasian and 32 percent of Caucasian students reported binge drinking.¹
