Are there any National Clearinghouses from which I can order publications regarding substance abuse and other public health topics?

The federal government operates several clearinghouses that make public health publications available to the public at little or no cost. The following is a list of some key clearinghouses:

National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information (NCADI) is the information service of the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (http://www.health.org/) of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (http://www.samhsa.gov/) in the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (http://www.os.dhhs.gov/). NCADI is the world's largest resource for current information and materials concerning substance abuse. NCADI services include:

  • an information services staff (English, Spanish, TDD capability) equipped to respond to the public's alcohol, tobacco, and drug (ATD) inquiries

  • the distribution of free or low-cost ATD materials, including fact sheets, brochures, pamphlets, monographs, posters, and video tapes from an inventory of over 1,000 items

  • a repertoire of culturally-diverse prevention, intervention, and treatment resources tailored for use by parents, teachers, youth, communities and prevention/treatment professionals

  • customized searches in the form of annotated bibliographies from alcohol and drug databases

The CDC National Prevention Information Network (NPIN) is the U.S. reference, referral, and distribution service for information on HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and tuberculosis (TB). NPIN produces, collects, catalogs, processes, stocks, and disseminates materials and information on HIV/AIDS, STDs, and TB to organizations and people working in those disease fields. To accomplish its mission, NPIN offers a number of Network specialized services including searchable databases, reference and referral services, this website, resource centers, a free fax service, and a resource service for business and labor groups. All publications available from NPIN are free of charge, however, quantities are limited. For more information visit their website at http://www.cdcnpin.org/scripts/index.asp.

National Technical Information Service (NTIS) is the largest, central resource for government-funded scientific, technical, engineering, and business related information. It has a selection of videos and materials related to drug abuse. Check individual catalog entries for NTIS order numbers and prices. NTIS charges a $4 handling fee for each order. For more information call 1-800-553-6847 or visit their website at http://www.ntis.gov/.

U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) produces and distributes Federal Government information products. For more information call 202-512-1800 or visit their website at http://www.gpo.gov/.

Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) Many NIDA publications are available through the FDLP, established by Congress more than 130 years ago to ensure that the American public has access to its Government's information.
