I am interested in finding articles
and materials about substance abuse prevention on the Internet. Are there
web-based databases where I can search for this type of information?
For prevention practitioners, online databases have greatly increased
access to key information about research and practice in substance abuse
prevention. With the growing emphasis on science-based prevention, many
preventionists are seeking bibliographic references related to effective
prevention practice. The following is a partial list of online databases
that have this type of information.
American Psychological Association
- PsycInfo Direct Database http://www.psycinfo.com/
The PsycINFO database stores bibliographic references for more than 1.5
million references to psychological literature. The database is updated
monthly with approximately 5,500 new references. The PsycINFO database
includes references to journal articles, dissertations, reports, books,
and other documents. APA members can subscribe or, for $9.95, you can
search the APA PsycINFO Direct database for a 24-hour period.
Center for the Study and Prevention
of Violence (CSPV) Database http://www.Colorado.EDU/cspv/infohouse/databases.html
CSPV Violence Literature Database (VioLit): This database stores bibliographic
information and abstracts of literature related to violence prevention.
Sources include journal articles, books, reports and literature reviews
juvenile violence-related topics. Free access via the Internet.
Center for Substance Abuse Research
(CESAR) http://www.cesar.umd.edu/cesar/library.asp
CESAR contains selected publications, newsletter, and links to research
databases. CESAR provides information on substance abuse and related problems
in Maryland and nationally.
Combined Health Information Database
(CHID) http://chid.nih.gov
CHID is a bibliographic database produced by health-related agencies of
the Federal government. Titles, abstracts, and availability information
for health education resources is provided. New records are added quarterly.

The National Clearinghouse for Alcohol
and Drug Information (NCADI) http://www.health.org/dbases
NCADI is the information service of CSAP/SAMHSA. NCADI is the world's
largest resource for current information and materials concerning substance
abuse. Several links to high-powered academic databases like ERIC, ETOH,
and Medline are provided. There is access to the Prevention Materials
Database including over 8,000 prevention-related materials and the Treatment
Resources Database, all of which is available to the public.
National Criminal Justice Reference
Service (NCJRS) Abstract Database http://www.ncjrs.org/search.html
The National Criminal Justice Reference Service Abstracts Database contains
summaries of more than 150,000 criminal justice publications, including
federal, state, and local government reports, books, research reports,
journal articles, and unpublished research. Free access via the Internet.
National Institute on Alcohol Abuse
and Alcoholism (NIAAA)- ETOH Database http://etoh.niaaa.nih.gov/
ETOH is a comprehensive online bibliographic database containing over
100,000 records on alcohol abuse and alcoholism. ETOH is updated monthly
and contains research findings from the late 1960s to the present, as
well as historical research literature. Access to ETOH requires a browser
with frame capabilities. Free access via the Internet. NIAAA also provides

National Library of Medicine - PubMed
Database http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi
PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, provides access
to over 12 million MEDLINE citations back to the mid-1960's and additional
life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full
text articles and other related resources.
