    This two-page fact sheet describes post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and details its symptoms. It also provides tips for adults helping a child with PTSD and lists several sources of additional information. National organizations listed as resources include EMS Partnership for Children member groups, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychological Association, and the National Association of Social Workers.

    Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has published this pocket reference intended for mental health workers and other human service providers who assist survivors following a disaster.

Organizations

  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Division (www.bt.cdc.gov) This website contains CDC health alerts, advisories, and updates, and includes sections on agents/diseases, epidemiology/surveillance, information/communications, laboratory issues, legal/ethical issues, media/health, planning/guidance, US state/local efforts, and training. A version of the site is available in Spanish.
  • David Baldwin's award winning Trauma Information (www.trauma-pages.com) website includes links to online handouts and fact sheets that address traumatic stress in a variety of disaster situations. The site also connects to several disaster tracking websites and organizations—covering the range of natural and man-made disasters, including terrorism.
  • Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) (www.fema.gov/) An independent agency of the federal government, FEMA provides a comprehensive, risk-based, emergency management program of mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. FEMA also maintains the Global Emergency Management System (www.fema.gov/hazard/index.shtm), which contains links to sites in a variety of categories related to emergency management.
  • National Safety Council (www.nsc.org/issues/prepare.htm) This site contains resources for the workplace, emergency responders, families, and journalists.
  • The National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) (ndms.dhhs.gov/index.html), housed within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Response Division, Operations Branch, is responsible for supporting Federal agencies in the management and coordination of the Federal medical response to major emergencies and Federally-declared disasters.
  • The Office of Homeland Security (www.whitehouse.gov/homeland) coordinates national strategy to protect against terrorist threats or attacks in the United States. Their site lists the latest news, announcements, legislation and tips on terrorism, including links to a number of U.S. government sites dealing with this topic or related issues.
  • World Health Organization: Humanitarian Action (www.who.int/disasters) advocates for public health practice in humanitarian situations.
