Hi. My name is Heather Schumacher-Karjane and
I'm a program evaluator for a variety of projects that look at violence
against women. Never think you can get away without doing a pilot
test. I worked with a project that didn't pilot-test a survey it
was going to use to find out more about the domestic violence programs
with whom we were working. On the survey, we asked how they "track" clients.
This was a major mistake. They were incensed about our use of the
word "track." For them, it implied stalking. And it also revealed
our lack of knowledge about what these programs do. They don't follow
up on cases because of confidentiality and security reasons. It took
us years to develop any credibility with these programs after using
that term.
