Opening remarks should introduce the leaders, remind the participants of the purpose of the group, explain "housekeeping" procedures, and set the stage for the discussion by introducing the topics and the rules for the discussion.

Here is a sample script you can adapt as the opening remarks for a focus group:

My name is [name]. I am [define position and organization]. This is [name of assistant leader]. He [or she] is [define position and organization].

This meeting is part of a research project to learn [define purpose].

Today we are going to discuss [define topics. In general, it is very helpful to give the group a preview of the main topics/questions that they will be discussing.].

What you say regarding these issues can make a difference. The results of this discussion will be used to [define goal].

We are recording this discussion so that we can review what is said at a later time. Only the research staff will have access to this tape. No one else will ever hear it.

We will also be taking notes. Don't be concerned about what we write down and what we don't. Most of our note-taking will take place when we listen to the recording we have made.

Everything you say will be confidential. No one will be identified in any reports about the group. We expect everyone in the group to respect the confidentiality of others. You can discuss what is said here outside the group, but you should not identify anyone who was in the group to anyone outside the group.

You were all selected to participate in the same way. [Explain method.]

We will be asking for your opinions and your experiences. There are no right or wrong answers to the questions we ask. We don't expect everyone here to agree about everything. We are not here to decide who is right or wrong or to settle differences of opinion. We simply want your perspective, which will help us [reiterate purpose].

Everyone does not need to answer every question, but we expect to hear from each of you during the meeting. Please don't hesitate to participate. That's why you are here. Please do not have private conversations with one another during the group discussions. It makes it very hard for us to keep track of what is being said.

You will be paid [describe method, e.g., by check at the end of the meeting]. If you have any concerns after the meeting, feel free to call me at the number on your participant materials.

You can help yourselves to snacks anytime. The bathrooms are [describe location]. We will take a short break about halfway through the meeting, at about [insert time].

I would like to begin by having each person introduce him/herself. Please only use your first name and tell us a bit about why you agreed to participate in this meeting. Let's begin with you . [Introductions]

Thank you. Any questions?

OK, let's begin.
