Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan’s Anishnaabek Healing Circle: Sowing the Seeds of Recovery

The Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan’s Anishnaabek Healing Circle collaborates with nDigiDreams, LLC to produce Sowing the Seeds of Recovery—a series of digital stories, three-to-five minutes in length, told by people from Michigan tribal communities who are in recovery from inter-generational trauma and addiction. The approach offers the storytellers a loving and respectful forum for finding their voice and speaking their truth. Listeners are able to witness the storyteller’s bravery, honesty, and truth in a respectful medium that conveys the wisdom of a shared journey. The stories bring a message of hope and healing to families touched by inter-generational trauma and addiction.

The stories are available in the following formats:

  • The Anishnaabek Healing Circle website (www.atrhealingcircle.com)
  • DVD and CD, distributed to the collaborating tribes’ behavioral health (prevention and treatment) programs
  • DVD and CD, distributed to the storytellers for their families and friends
  • DVD and CD, distributed to SAMHSA and to tribal Access to Recovery grantees
  • DVD, distributed as gifts and prizes in tribal behavioral health programs in Michigan
  • The nDigiDreams website (www.ndigidreams.com)
  • Facebook and YouTube

With funding from SAMHSA’s FY2014 Subcontracts to Build Evaluation Capacity for Evidence-Based Interventions, the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan’s Anishnaabek Healing Circle will enhance the evaluation of Sowing the Seeds of Recovery to more effectively evaluate the use of storytelling and eventually obtain an “evidence-based” designation from SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices. Specific activities will include:

  • Completing refinements to the written logic model
  • Beginning work on a digital logic model to find an effective approach to convey to the Anishnaabek community members what the Sowing the Seeds of Recovery initiative is about
  • Refining the computer-based Anishnaabek Cultural Assessment
