Lac du Flambeau Public School: Minobimaadiziiwin Coalition

Formed in 2007, the Minobimaadiziiwin (Ojibwe for ‘good way of life’) Coalition is a volunteer-based initiative dedicated to preventing and reducing substance abuse, especially youth alcohol use, among the Lac du Flambeau Indian Reservation’s 2000 tribal members. Many of the Coalition’s prevention activities focus on the needs of the 480 students (four-year-old Kindergarten through eighth grade) and their families in Lac du Flambeau Public School, located on the reservation in Vilas County in rural north-central Wisconsin.

To achieve its goal, the coalition works with a range of partners on a variety of activities, including: hosting family-focused cultural events that offer fun, healthy activities in the community as alternatives to alcohol; educating parents, their children, and other community members about the consequences of youth alcohol use and other substance abuse; engaging businesses in active monitoring and restricting of youth access to alcohol; and sponsoring graffiti abatement efforts and other delinquency prevention activities. In recent years, the Minobimaadiziiwin Coalition has also targeted the prevention of prescription drug abuse among adults by establishing a permanent prescription drug disposal box.

With funding from SAMHSA’s Service to Science Subcontract to Build Evaluation Capacity of Evidence-Based Interventions, program staff will develop evaluation instruments, data collection protocols, and data management analysis systems appropriate to the Lac du Flambeau tribal community. The Coalition will also conduct focus groups with community members to gather qualitative data about the impact of coalition-sponsored activities on youth substance use. Through these enhancements, coalition members will be better able to prioritize and guide future Coalition activities and to report on accomplishments and challenges to key tribal and community stakeholders.
