Sherman County Prevention Coalition: The After School Program

The After School Program, now beginning its ninth year of operation, aims to build resiliency, reduce substance abuse, and promote the mental health of children in kindergarten through sixth grade through a comprehensive program that teaches alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use prevention. It focuses on strengthening eight specific protective factors to build better futures for the youth of Sherman County:

  • Optimistic thinking
  • Relationship skills
  • Self-awareness
  • Personal responsibility
  • Self-management
  • Goal-directed behavior
  • Social awareness
  • Decision-making

Participants in The After School Program take part in a variety of activities, with each day focusing on a different issue: academics (Monday); health and safety (Tuesday); alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use prevention (Wednesday); assets (Thursday); and social skills (Friday). The schedule is consistent, and there is always time set aside for large and small group discussions, asset-building, healthy snacks, recess, homework help, silent-reading, and enrichment activities.

With funding from SAMHSA’s FY2014 Subcontracts to Build Evaluation Capacity for Evidence-Based Interventions, Sherman County Prevention Coalition will enhance the evaluation of The After School Program through a combination of observations, parent surveys, and pre-test and post-test student surveys. Specific activities will include:

  • Using the validated tool The Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA) to evaluate outcomes
  • Using the DESSA parent survey and pre-test and post-test surveys
  • Using electronic attendance collection that includes dosage data
  • Performing a comparison study at the end of the school year
