Training Overview

Youth Tobacco Prevention Policies & Programs in Schools & Communities

Goal:

To help participants learn about effective tobacco-free school policies and enforcement strategies and how to develop creative and effective alternatives to punitive measures.

Target Audience:

This workshop is designed for school and community prevention specialists, school, public health and law enforcement officials, parents and community representatives who seek to improve current tobacco prevention programs and practices and to reduce the health consequences of youth tobacco use.

Training Objectives:

As a result of participating in this training, participants will be better able to:

  1. Address tobacco use by young people both as a discipline problem and as a health issue, including the likelihood of a nicotine addiction and the potential health consequences of continued tobacco use.
  2. Identify the essential components of an effective tobacco-free school policy.
  3. Review and adjust consequences for tobacco use violations to ensure that consequences serve as a deterrent to tobacco use and can be applied uniformly and quickly.
  4. Integrate student tobacco use violations into the existing student assistance process.
  5. Provide training for school staff to implement school tobacco policy and procedures.
  6. Establish relationships with community-based programs and services for diversion and cessation to ensure that a range of services is available to meet student needs.
  7. Develop K-12 classroom prevention programs that address both social influences and personal factors that are based on the social influences model for primary prevention.
  8. Evaluate school policies and programs regularly to ensure that they meet current needs and resources.
 

Format of Training:

The workshop can run anywhere from 4-6 hours.

Four-hour workshop- present content, review handouts and conduct selected activities.

Six-hour workshop- present content, review handouts and conduct all activities.
