Connecting Cultural Diversity with Substance Abuse Prevention

This guidebook, developed by staff of the Minnesota Institute of Public Health in collaboration with diverse staff representing the African American Family Services, Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio (CLUES), Red Lake Nation, Lao Family Community of Minnesota and United Cambodian Association, provides insights for prevention specialists and volunteers who work in diverse communities. Each section presents information about a specific community and also contains contact information/websites for each of the various populations. It poses questions for readers to ask themselves and challenges readers to examine their belief, stereotypes, knowledge and understanding of different ethnic or racial groups.

Early and Often: How Social Marketing of Prevention Can Help Your Community

The challenge of social marketing is that there is an agenda beyond choosing brand X over brand Y. It's more complex than that; we want people to change their behavior. And we want to use communication systems to do it. Early & Often includes tips and guidelines on:

  • planning a campaign
  • working with a communications firm
  • getting "pro bono" help
  • conducting focus groups, and other research
  • viewing the target audience as 'customer'
  • evaluating your initiative
