Joining Voices – Healing the Healers is sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Human Services’ Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division-American Indian Section, the Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center, and CSAP’s Central CAPT.
This prevention conference is being held in conjunction with the Minnesota American Indian Institute on Alcohol and Drug Studies (MAIIADS) conference.
Join us for an opportunity to network and learn about substance abuse prevention. The conference has been designed to provide youth and adult participants an opportunity to learn about specific prevention programs and strategies that are being implemented with Native American audiences, to talk with others who are interested in making prevention programs work effeiciently and effectively, and to strengthen a good path of life for youth.
The prevention conference begins the evening of August 3 and concludes by late afternoon on August 5.

Conference Highlights:
Holding the prevention conference in conjunction with the Minnesota American Indian Institute on alcohol and Drug Studies Treatment (MAIIADS) provides many unique opportunities this year.
A full conference brochure will be available soon. For now, here are some of the highlights:
- This year’s conference will be held at Fond du Lac Tribal Community College in Cloquet, Minnesota – a beautiful setting to enhance the true learning and intent of the conference.
- Lodging accommodations are available at Black Bear Casino Resort and Hotel (located 5 miles from the college).
- The conference kicks off with registration beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the college, followed by supper. Then, there will be an opening session beginning around 6:00 p.m., followed by entertainment to possibly include a talent show after that.
- Tuesday morning keynote is Dr. Cecil White Hat, who will present “Traditional Family Roles: Assessing the American Indian Family.”
- Wednesday morning keynote is Dr. Steven Dakai, who will present “If I Start to Cry, Will I ever Stop?”
- Breakout session titles for adults include When Poison Came to the People, Gambling, PTSD, with more to be added soon.
- Breakout session titles for the youth track include a poster contest focusing on How Drugs and Alcohol Affect My Family, When Poison Came to the People, Brain Development, with more to be added soon.
- Other activities available (in conjunction with MAIIADS):
- Massage
- Reiki
- Language and Culture Class
- Community Feast on Tuesday evening
- Conference registration fee is $50 per adult. Up to three youth may attend at no cost with one paid adult.
- The registration fee includes supper on Monday, August 3; breakfast, lunch and supper on Tuesday, August 4; and breakfast and lunch on Wednesday, August 5. Participants do have the option of purchasing a meal ticket for supper on Wednesday, August 5, at an additional cost.
- Registration fee of $50 for one adult plus up to 3 youth at no additional fee includes the following meals: (click here to download the menu). Meal tickets are required to participate in all meals; pre-registration is necessary. Meal tickets are available for purchase by non-registered individuals. Supper on Wednesday, August 5 is not included in the registration fee. Prevention Program Sharing Conference participants are welcome to purchase a ticket to remain on for supper on the 5th if they so choose.
- Pre-registration is required. There will not be on-site registration available. Registered participants will check in and receive conference materials and meal tickets. Important: meal tickets are required for all meals.
- Registration is limited.

Room rates are:
- $55.00 per night for standard rooms (2 queen or 1 king)
- $60.00 per night for poolside rooms (2 queen or 1 king)
- $65.00 per night for suites (king and sleeper sofa)
(limited number of suites available)
The room rates above are good through July 20, 2009, at which time any rooms in this block will be released.
The conference will be held at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, which is 5 miles from Black Bear Casino Resort.
On-site registration will not be available at the conference. The registration fee is $50 per adult with up to three youth able to attend at no cost, per adult. If an individual has not pre-registered and needs to purchase meal tickets upon arriving at the conference, the total cost (payable at the conference check-in table) for all meals is $65 per person (adult and youth).
