Science to Service Initiative

The purpose of the SAMHSA/CSAP’s Science to Service Initiative is to provide analytic technical assistance to States, communities and local organizations to guide strategic selection and use of evidence-based prevention interventions that effectively address community needs. Through an interactive “learning community” approach, the Southwest CAPT will bring together current and potential new implementers with developers/experts from selected evidence-based interventions to discuss the underlying theory base of their intervention (what works and why) and real-world implementation issues facing practitioners in the field.

CSAP’s Strategic Prevention Framework will provide the context in which to examine the potential “fit” and utility of the logic model inherent in specific evidence-based interventions to local circumstances of participants – i.e. focus on the systematic linkage of empirically identified problem/condition, to strategies/activities directed to address it, to outcomes expected all along the way. Through a learning community approach and hands-on technical assistance, the Southwest CAPT will apply the concepts of CSAP’s Strategic Prevention Framework to guide participants through a logical thought process as they examine and learn about specific evidence-based interventions (focusing on both the intervention’s underlying theory base and implementation experiences of current implementers). The goal of this project is to assist States and communities in applying the knowledge and experiential learning drawn from specific evidence-based interventions to inform and improve decisions on selection, implementation and use of these interventions to effectively address local needs.
