Policy Change—Public Policy Change Strategies for Prevention Impacts
This workshop is a follow-up to the Utilizing Policy as a Prevention Tool workshop.
Environmental strategies involving change in policy can be an effective means of influencing behavior among whole populations due to the reach of policy impact. Policy tools offer a means of influencing standards of behavior in all aspects of prevention planning and impact. “Big P” policies are those that are adopted by units of government and become the codified rules that govern public behavior and can therefore regulate the sale and use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs as well as the environments that invite use of these drugs. This workshop reviews a variety of policies that are theorized to or have been found to influence substance use and related consequences. Discussion will include a review of the policy adoption process, planning for policy change, the role of coalitions in policy change and strategies for influencing policy adoption.
