Training Overview

Grant Writing: Writing Successful Applications

Target Audience:
This training can be provided in a beginner or advanced format for novice or experienced grant writers. The best audience is a concentration of either novice or advanced writers rather than a mixture of the two.

Training Objectives:
At the end of the beginner workshop, participants will have been exposed to major federal funding streams, to general principles of effective grantsmanship, and to the major components of a successful grant application.

At the end of the advanced workshop, participants will have mastered all of the beginner skills, but will also have worked in small groups with a “live” RFP or GFA, will have developed responsive goals and objectives and abstract, and will have received critique of their small group work.

Format:
The format of the training is a combination of lecture and interactive activities. The beginning track is primarily lecture, while the advanced track includes significant hands-on activity. Additionally, the workshop can be presented in a Training of Trainers (TOT) format. A PowerPoint presentation is available.

Number of Participants:
In the beginning track, one facilitator can easily serve up to 50 participants. In the advanced track, due to its hands-on nature, a small group is best, preferably no more than 20.

Time Frame:
The intermediate track takes approximately 4 hours. The advanced track takes approximately 8 hours. Either can be expanded to a higher degree of thoroughness with more time. The TOT component adds a minimum of 2 additional hours.
