This is the web site for the office of the "Drug Czar." It is an excellent resource for national drug policy, as well as information directly related to prevention and treatment of substance abuse. It also contains a useful and extensive page of links to other substance abuse-related web sites.

Too Smart to Start
This website contains information on the public education initiative Too Smart to Start, which provides research-based strategies and materials to professionals and volunteers at the community level to help them conduct an underage alcohol use prevention program. The materials are designed to educate 9- to 13-year-olds about the harms of alcohol use and to support parents and caregivers as they participate in their children's activities.

Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, the Higher Education Center provides support to all institutions of higher education in their efforts to address alcohol and other drug problems. The Center also receives financial support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

The National Center for Addiction and Drug Abuse at Columbia University (CASA)
A highly informative website covering many aspect of prevention. CASA is a think/action tank that brings together under one roof all of the professional disciplines (health policy, medicine and nursing, communications, economics, sociology and anthropology, law and law enforcement, business, religion and education) needed to study and combat all forms of substance abuse – illegal drugs, pills, alcohol and tobacco – as they affect all aspects of society.

The Society for Prevention Research is a professional organization focused upon the advancement of science-based prevention programs and policies through empirical research. The membership of the organization consists of scientists, practitioners, advocates, administrators, and policy makers who are concerned with problems, issues, and challenges pertaining to the prevention of public health and social problems such as drug, alcohol, and tobacco use and abuse; psychiatric disorders, other mental health problems and related comorbidities; suicide; HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases; delinquency, crime, and violence; child abuse; marital and couple distress; adolescent pregnancy; and school and work participation and performance.

Alcohol Free Children
Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free, a unique coalition of more than 30 Governors' spouses, Federal agencies, and public and private organizations, is an initiative to prevent the use of alcohol by children ages 9 to 15. The mission of CADCA is to build and strengthen the capacity of coalitions to prevent and reduce substance abuse and violence in communities across America.

National Association for Children of Alcoholics
The National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA) believes that none of these vulnerable children should grow up in isolation and without support. We are the only national nonprofit membership organization working on behalf of children of alcoholics. Our mission is to advocate for all children and families affected by alcoholism and other drug dependencies. This mission drives all of our programs and materials to help children of alcoholics. In a word, we help kids who are hurt by parental alcohol and drug use.

National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors (NASADAD)
The National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors, Inc. (NASADAD) is a private, not-for-profit educational, scientific, and informational organization. The Association was originally incorporated in 1971 to serve State Drug Agency Directors, and then in 1978 the membership was expanded to include State Alcoholism Agency Directors. Today all States have combined State Alcoholism and Drug Agency Directors. NASADAD's basic purpose is to foster and support the development of effective alcohol and other drug abuse prevention and treatment programs throughout every State.

National Families in Action
National Families in Action is a national drug education, prevention, and policy center based in Atlanta, Georgia. The organization was founded in 1977. Its mission is to help families and communities prevent drug abuse among children by promoting policies based on science.

American Council for Drug Education
Founded in 1977, the American Council for Drug Education (ACDE) was created to ensure that the public has access to scientifically-based, compelling prevention programs and materials. Today, ACDE reaches more than 200 million people through print, broadcast media, and film, providing the very latest scientifically accurate information on illegal drugs and their effects. ACDE makes available a range of educational programs and services, from a magazine designed for teachers, to videos for pre-schoolers. ACDE also operates the free, national, 24-hour 1-800-DRUGHELP helpline with a staff specially trained to answer questions about substance abuse. Additional ACDE efforts include a national volunteerism program that supports organizations involved with substance abuse, and workplace initiatives that help private and public sector organizations establish drug-free work environments with education and prevention programs. In 1995, ACDE became an affiliate of The Phoenix House Foundation, the largest, private, non-profit drug abuse service agency in the country.

Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring Program (ADAM)
In 1987, the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) initiated the Drug Use Forecasting (DUF) program to track trends in the prevalence and types of drug use among booked arrestees in urban areas. ADAM, the Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring program, succeeds DUF and currently operates in 35 data collection sites, expanding to a maximum of 75 sites by the year 2001.

Monitoring the Future (MTF) Survey
MTF explores changes in values, behaviors, and lifestyle of American youth. Provides an annual systematic and accurate description of the youth population and quantifies the direction and rate of change occurring over time. Respondents are nationally representative of high school seniors in the U.S. and respond to about 100 drug-use and demographic questions as well as to about 200 questions on subjects such as attitudes toward government, social institutions, race relations, changing roles for women, educational aspirations, occupational aims, and marital and family plans.

National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information (NCADI)
National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information (NCADI) is the world's largest resource for current information and materials about alcohol and other drugs. This website also includes annotated bibliographies from ATOD data bases, rapid dissemination of Federal grant announcements, and application kits for ATOD prevention programs, treatment, and research funding opportunities.

National Household Survey on Drug Abuse
The NHSDA is designed to produce drug and alcohol use incidence and prevalence estimates and report the consequences and patterns of use and abuse in the general U.S. civilian population aged 12 and older. Questions include age at first use, as well as lifetime, annual, and past-month usage for the following drug classes: cannabis, cocaine, hallucinogens, heroin, alcohol, tobacco, and non-medical use of prescription drugs, including psychotherapeutics. Data also include problems from use of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco, perceptions of the risks involved, and personal and family income sources and amounts. Demographic data include gender, race, age, ethnicity, educational level, job status, income level, veteran status, household composition, and population density.

Partnership for a Drug Free America
The Partnership for a Drug-Free America is a private, non-profit, non-partisan coalition of professionals from the communications industry. To date, more than $2.8 billion in media exposure and some 500 ads have been donated to the Partnership's national campaign, making our effort the single largest public service ad campaign in history. National Center on Substance Abuse and Child Welfare (NCSACW)
The National Center on Substance Abuse and Child Welfare (NCSACW) is an initiative of the Department of Health and Human Services and jointly funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) and the Administration on Children, Youth and Families (ACYF), Children's Bureau's Office on Child Abuse and Neglect (OCAN). NCSACW's goals are to develop and implement a comprehensive program of information gathering and dissemination, to provide technical assistance, and to develop knowledge that promotes effective practice, organizational, and system changes at the local, state, and national levels.
