Single State Agency (SSA)

Vermont Department of Health, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs: The Department of Health’s Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs (ADAP) serve as the Single State Agency that oversees the New Directions State Incentive Grant (SIG), the Substance Abuse Block Grant, the Office for Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention’s (OJJDP) Underage Drinking Grant, as well as state general funds related to substance abuse prevention.

Through statewide projects, field services and grants, the Prevention Unit of ADAP provides support to community groups, coalitions and agencies aimed at healthy development and the prevention of substance abuse.

Other Statewide Substance Abuse Prevention Funding Agencies

Department of Education: The Vermont Department of Education oversees the Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities grant, which funds school-based prevention services throughout Vermont. It also coordinates the Vermont Health Education Resource Centers, and the Teen Leadership Safety Program.

Department of Liquor Control: The Vermont Department of Liquor Control coordinates community level alcohol and tobacco compliance checks throughout the state. Department staff also provides community education on underage drinking and legal issues in Vermont.

Agency of Human Services: The Vermont Agency of Human Services works with the State Team for Children, Families and Individuals to track health and social outcomes. It publishes the Community Profiles on the status of these outcomes. Its Planning Division also manages several prevention grants, including the OJJDP grant and the Safe and Drug Free Schools grant and Communities grant – Governor’s Set-Aside.

Agencies/Organizations in State that Provide Technical Assistance and Training

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs - Their mission is to help Vermonters prevent and eliminate the problems caused by alcohol and other drug use. In partnership with other public and private organizations, they plan, support and evaluate a comprehensive system that provides education, prevention, intervention, treatment, recovery, and research services. Community Resource Center: ADAP’s Prevention Unit includes a staff of 10 regional substance abuse prevention consultants who provide training and technical assistance to communities throughout Vermont. They also link local groups, agencies and coalitions with other training, information and support resources in the state.

Radar Network (Regional Alcohol and Drug Awareness Resource)

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs is the State RADAR center for the state of Vermont.

State Data Sources

Vermont Community Profile Reports: Data are collected and compiled representing the 60 School Supervisory Unions in Vermont. Total state data and corresponding county data are incorporated into each report.

The statewide results of the Vermont Youth Risk Behavior Survey is available online as an html document and in Adobe Acrobat format.

Project Cork - Their mission is to assemble and disseminate current, authoritative information on substance abuse to clinicians, health care providers, human service personnel, and policy makers in the State of Vermont and the region. CORK maintains a resource center, produces a bibliographic database, offers current awareness services, produces resource materials, responds to queries, and collaborates in professional education efforts.
