Single State Agency (SSA)

New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Addiction Services (DAS): The Division of Addictions Services serves as the Single State Agency for New Jersey. Its mission is to decrease misuse and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs by New Jersyans by supporting the development of a comprehensive network of prevention, intervention, and treatment services in New Jersey.

Provider Network

DAS receives its funding from the Federal Block Grant and administers this through grant/contracts that provide monies to community-based prevention and treatment providers. DAS also interacts with state, county and local government and provider organizations/associations to plan the delivery of prevention and treatment services at the community level.

Other Statewide Substance Abuse Prevention Funding Agencies

Department of Education: The New Jersey State Department of Education oversees New Jersey’s Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities grant, which funds school-based prevention services throughout the state.

Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse: The Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse reviews and coordinates state-level efforts to plan for and provide treatment, research, evaluation, education, and media campaigns to combat alcoholism and drug abuse. The Council also reviews all the county alliance plans, distributes grants to municipal alliances, evaluates the existing funding mechanisms for alcoholism and drug abuse services and collects necessary data from agencies at the state, county, and local levels.

Office of Highway Safety: The New Jersey Office of Highway Safety administers funding to local schools and communities to develop and implement programs for reducing traffic crashes and the resulting deaths, injuries, and property damage from drunk driving.

Department of Corrections: The Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Committee (JJDP) is affiliated with the Juvenile Justice Commission (JJC). The Department of Health and Senior Services is represented on the JJDP. The JJDP work cooperatively with the JJC, County Youth Services Commissions, and institutions/agencies serving youth in order to plan a continuum of services for New Jersey’s youth.

The JJC is in but not of the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety. It coordinates with counties through the County Youth Services Commissions in the to plan, develop, and implement delinquency prevention programs, services, and sanctions for juvenile delinquents. The JJC administers the State/Community Partnership Grant Program, which provides financial assistance to counties for local programming necessary to respond to local juvenile justice issues.

Project Pride, a program run through the Department of Corrections, involves sending inmates into schools to talk to students about the wrong choices they have made and the resulting consequences.

Agencies/Organizations in State that Provide Technical Assistance and Training

New Jersey Prevention Network (NJPN): NJPN is committed to advocacy and collaboration in its efforts to educate the citizens of New Jersey with regard to the consequences of drug use. Our primary purpose is to decrease substance abuse in New Jersey by developing and executing effective prevention programs and related services. For this reason, all NJPN programs and services have a common goal of reducing the incidence of alcoholism and drug addictions through prevention, education, advocacy, and public awareness. NJPN subcontracts with its member agencies to provide a resource center that provides training and technical assistance to each of the 21 counties in the state. NJPN sponsored events can be viewed by state or county on their online events calendar.

Princeton Center for Leadership Training: The Princeton Center for Leadership Training is a comprehensive, school-based program that trains adult mentors to work with a core group of peer leaders, preparing them to become peer educators in their schools.

RADAR Network (Regional Alcohol and Drug Awareness Resource)

New Jersey has both a state RADAR center and 21 county-level associate RADARS throughout the New Jersey Prevention Network. These agencies provide ATOD prevention information to prevention practitioners at the state and community levels.
