What federal and state government agencies might provide financial support to my community for substance abuse prevention programs, and where can I get information on these funding opportunities?

Several federal and state agencies provide funds to community coalitions that address substance abuse prevention in their communities. Following is a list of the best known federal agencies that provide grants for these types of programs.

State Funding

Communities can also receive program funding from various state agencies. Every state system is organized differently. Prevention funding may be available from one or more departments in your state government, including departments of education, health, mental health, justice, public safety, labor, social services, and highway safety. Funding also may be available though substance abuse prevention agencies and the Governor's office. To learn more about your state's funding patterns for substance abuse prevention, contact the Single State Agency (SSA) that oversees funding for these activities in your state.
