What is the difference between web-based learning and distance learning? How do I choose a legitimate web-based or distance learning course?

Web-based learning is a type of distance learning whereby, content, delivery, interaction and engagement in activities are conducted at-a-distance utilizing a specially developed Web environment. Occasionally, this type of learning was at one time, a face-to-face training or course that has been modified for use on the computer. Web-based learning can include one or more of the following:

There are several distance learning courses, including several web-based courses, that are available for prevention practitioners. If you are choosing a web-based or distance learning course from the Internet, you should be careful as to the source of the information. Not all Internet sites are checked for legitimacy. Even if the site is listed with popular search engines such as Yahoo! or Alta Vista, this is not a fool-proof method of checking the site’s authenticity. To protect yourself from fraudulent web sites, check the accreditation of the institution that is providing the course.
