CSAP’s Northeast CAPT

What works in substance abuse prevention? Over a 25-year history of substance abuse prevention, some efforts have paid off and others have not. Researchers have now made great strides in identifying effective programs, strategies, and principles that focus on preventing and reducing substance abuse and related risky behaviors. The materials included in this section have been developed by the Northeast CAPT to help practitioners identify, implement, and evaluate prevention programs that will . . .

Prevention Strategies
For the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), Gardner and Brounstein identified some key principles of effective substance abuse prevention. From these, CSAP's Northeast CAPT identified seven key prevention strategies shown by research to be effective. This section contains a collection of monographs, videos, fact sheets, and resource lists that describe each of these prevention strategies.

Critical Components
As prevention practitioners implementing programs in schools, communities, clinics, agencies, or other settings, it is critical to identify and use evidence-based strategies that are likely to be most effective in meeting the needs of the people with whom you work. This section contains a series of prevention critical component documents that highlight effective prevention practices by domain.

CSAP's Northeast CAPT Prevention Framework
This document highlights key elements used to support the application of evidence-based substance abuse prevention programs and strategies at the regional, state, and local levels. The framework defines major areas of consideration in evidence-based prevention, providing a broad overview of the theoretical foundation of a comprehensive prevention approach. The diagram lays out both the elements and the processes necessary for effective prevention approaches.

Bibliographies
This section contains a collection of bibliographies designed to help you access resources on topics related to substance abuse prevention.
