Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist

Goal:

To assist participants to design and implement scientifically defensible prevention strategies.

Target Audience:

This workshop is designed for individuals with little or no training in science-based prevention. Typical participants are program directors and managers, grant writers and those who provide direct services.

Training Objectives:

As a result of participating in this training, participants will be better able to:

  1. Understand the history of substance abuse and substance abuse prevention efforts in the U.S.
  2. Define science-based prevention and understand its relevance.
  3. Identify effective prevention principles, programs and strategies that have been evaluated using the scientific process.
  4. Use a systematic, scientific process to build effective prevention programs.
  5. Determine the effectiveness of existing programs using the criteria described in the training.
 

Format of Training:

This training is designed for 40 contact hours, but can be modified into a 24 contact hour training. Each section involves participants in a variety of teaching/learning strategies, including:

 

Training Organization:

The training is organized into 8 modules varying in length from 2-6 hours.
