Brief Overview of Statewide Prevention Plan

Minnesota currently does not have a comprehensive statewide prevention plan but is in the process of developing one. There are a number of prevention planning and policy efforts currently underway throughout the state. As part of the foundation for a statewide plan, Minnesota through the Governor's office in cooperation with MN Departments of Human Service, Public Safety, Health and Children, Families, and Learning, applied for and was awarded a National Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Initiative (State Incentive Cooperative Agreements for Community-Based Action) grant from the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Many of the goals of the State Incentive Cooperative Agreements for Community-Based Action Program were similar to the goals of ongoing state prevention planning efforts which were to more effectively leverage all federal and state prevention resources for state and community prevention services; provide a greater accountability of prevention services through effective data collection systems; application of scientifically-defensible prevention research and evaluation findings; increased technical support and assistance for State and Communities; and increased collaboration with national organizations serving youth. This grant helped to provide a framework to assist Minnesota in developing a statewide prevention plan within the next year.

Single State Agency (SSA) is the organization designated by the State Governor to coordinate substance abuse prevention efforts in that state.

State Regional Alcohol and Drug Awareness Resource (RADAR) Network consists of state clearinghouses, prevention resource centers, Department of Education Regional Training Centers, and national, international, and local organization supporting substance abuse prevention activities.

The National Prevention Network (NPN), an organization of State alcohol and other drug abuse prevention representatives, provides a national advocacy and communication system for prevention. NPN is administered by NASADAD.
