Brief Overview of Statewide Prevention Plan
On July 1, 1997, the Illinois Department of Human Services merged with other state human service departments. The Illinois Department of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Divisions were part of the reorganization of human services. Substance Abuse Prevention Services was moved to a Bureau in the Office of Prevention within the Division of Community Health and Prevention. Substance Abuse Treatment services is in the Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse. Both treatment and prevention have come together to develop a comprehensive plan for substance abuse. This plan is being developed with the assistance of community based providers and will reflect goals identified in CSAT's National Treatment Plan. Five areas are being addressed in the plan. Those areas are: Reducing Stigma and Changing Attitudes, Addressing Work Force Issues, Connecting Services and Research, Improving and Strengthening the Prevention and Treatment Systems Through Accountability, and Reducing the Prevention and Treatment Gap. Additionally, a plan called "Building the Illinois Substance Abuse Prevention System: A Framework for State Policy-Makers" outlines goals and objectives for substance abuse prevention and related risk factors. The goals address collaboration at the state level.
Single State Agency (SSA) is the organization designated by the State Governor to coordinate substance abuse prevention efforts in that state.
State Regional Alcohol and Drug Awareness Resource (RADAR) Network consists of state clearinghouses, prevention resource centers, Department of Education Regional Training Centers, and national, international, and local organization supporting substance abuse prevention activities.
The National Prevention Network (NPN), an organization of State alcohol and other drug abuse prevention representatives, provides a national advocacy and communication system for prevention. NPN is administered by NASADAD.
